Financial Controller
Hidden Villa is a nonprofit educational organization that uses its organic farm, wilderness, and community to teach and provide opportunities to learn about the environment and social justice. Hidden Villa stretches over 1600 acres of open space in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, about 40 miles south of San Francisco. We are seeking an experienced, administrative professional eager to work in a collegial environment to help propel the organization's fundraising and communications to the next level.

Position Description:
The Financial Controller provides leadership and direction of Hidden Villa’s finance and accounting processes. The Financial Controller creates budgets, manages cash flow, develops and implements financial policies, provides analysis of financial results, assists with financial strategy and decision making, assures financial and accounting compliance, manages the annual audit, and is responsible for the monthly reporting and close process. The Financial Controller directly supervises and provides backup for the Staff Accountant, and reports directly to the Executive Director.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Financial Management & Reporting
Lead the annual budgeting process and monitor adherence.
Oversee monthly close, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
Prepare and present financial packets for the Board and staff.
Manage fund accounting, including restricted and endowed funds.
Compliance & Risk Management
Direct annual audit and tax compliance.
Administer retirement plan compliance and audits.
Manage insurance renewals and unemployment trust funding.
Staff Supervision & Collaboration
Supervise Staff Accountant; provide backup for payroll, AP, and cash management.
Partner with Human Resources to review compensation and benefits.
Build strong working relationships with staff and Board.
Development & Grants Support
Advise Development staff on gift restrictions, grant budgets, and reporting.
Manage release of restricted funds as conditions are met.
Systems & Process Improvement
Oversee financial systems and integrations.
Implement technology improvements in payroll, AP, banking, and budgeting.
Governance & Board Engagement
Support and staff the Finance Committee.
Provide financial insights and fund management guidance to the Board and Executive Director.
Desired Experience/Qualifications:
Minimum of BA; CPA and/or MBA desired.
5 years experience in progressively responsible finance positions, preferably nonprofit focused.
2 years management experience required.
Commitment to or interest in mission-focused nonprofit organizations and their work.
Experience with nonprofit fund accounting and familiarity with multi-program organizations.
Advanced knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting best practices, laws, standards, and state/national regulations.
Experience creating and promoting a positive and supportive work environment while facing deadlines.
Technology savvy and advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software. Experience with the import/export of data from other software into QuickBooks Online. Analytical ability to develop and implement improvements.
Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance staff. Ability to exercise good judgment during times of ambiguity.
Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, board or other outside partners.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This position is a full-time, exempt position. The compensation for this position is approximately $125k per year, commensurate with experience. This position is full time and will be required to be onsite 3 days per week minimum in Los Altos Hills. Workdays are Monday through Friday, occasional weekend or evening work will be required to support organization/board events. This position is fully benefitted, including paid time off, health insurance and retirement. Because Hidden Villa is a youth-serving organization, all applicants will be required to complete a background check and Live Scan fingerprinting before hire. Due to the nature of Hidden Villa’s operations, work hours may vary.
